Urmi Rahman was born in Khulna, Bangladesh. She spent her childhood in the jungles – in the mangrove forests of the Sunderbans and in the Chittagong Hill Tracts – with her Forest Officer father.
After finishing her Masters degree from Chittagong University, Urmi started her professional career as a journalist, followed by several stints with different newspaper and Bangladesh Press Institute. She went to Michigan State University, USA and Press Foundation of Asia, Manila, Philippines on a UNESCO Fellowship. Urmi went over to Britain in the beginning of 1985 to join BBC World Service in London as a Producer-Broadcaster.
Urmi has a number of publications to her credit, both fiction and non-fiction. She has translated some books from English to Bengali. Urmi has some books published by the London-based publishing houses.
Since her retirement Urmi has settled in Kolkata (Calcutta) with her Indian husband
