Samrat Choudhury is a journalist and author from Shillong. His first novel, The Urban Jungle, was published by Penguin Books in 2011. It was nominated for the prestigious Man Asian Literary Prize. He is also the author of several short stories that have appeared in English and in translation in German, Spanish and Portuguese.
His favorite form of writing, of which he is a real master, is the essay. Some of his essays have appeared in literary magazines, newspapers and news magazines.
He has written for The Times of India, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, The Asian Age, The Shillong Times, Deccan Chronicle, India Today, Outlook, Caravan, Open, The New York Times, The Dhaka Tribune, The Friday Times of Pakistan, and the German literary magazine Reportagen, among others.
He is currently working on a nonfiction book on the Brahmaputra river for a major publisher, and trying to juggle a couple of columns alongside.
