Kula Saikia

Well known as a short story writer and a Sahitya Akademy Award Winner (2015) Shri Kula Saikia (born 1959,Assam) has got 20 short story collections published to his credit. Penguin Publication house has published his novel recently.  He is a regular contributor to literary magazines and national dailies  both in English and in Assamese. He  was awarded the Munin Barkataki Award for Best Book of the year 1999 in Assam. In 2000 he was selected for prestigious  Katha Award for his short story. His unique story telling craft has given him a distinctive space in contemporary fiction writing in Assamese as a trend setter making him popular  amongst  the new generation fiction writers. Shri  Saikia, a highly acclaimed dramatist, have written three plays, and  scripted two telefilms. Some of his plays were  staged in different Theatre Festivals in the country. Some of Saikia’s short stories have been translated and published in English and  other Indian regional languages. He has been a panelist in a number of literature festivals in the country.

Kula Saikia  had his Post Graduation in Economics  from Delhi School of Economics after which he was teaching Economics for a while in the Hindu College, Delhi University. Presently  he is  an  officer in the rank of Special   DGP in Assam belonging to 1985 batch of Indian Police Service . Shri Saikia was a Fulbright Scholar at  Pennsylvania State  University and also worked as a consultant in World Bank, Washington for a short while. He was awarded President’s Police Medal twice.
